A Scheduling Habit I Can't Stop Thinking About

I finished reading Cal Newport’s book, “Digital Minimalism,” this week. One of my favorite points he makes is that in order to avoid overuse of mindless scrolling, we can cultivate high quality leisure activities. He mentions lots of ideas — taking time alone to walk, working with tools to hone a craft, or join a tribe-oriented workout group. But the thing I can’t stop thinking about is that he said you probably need to SCHEDULE high-quality leisure into your day. WOW.

He’s right about this — if I don’t plan on doing something fulfilling for myself or family, the time will just float by and my desire to learn a new skill could get replaced with a fog of social media scrolling (though, of course there is a time for that!).

For the next couple of months, I have SCHEDULED time to practice piano and learn three Christmas songs! I grew up taking piano lessons, but never was very good. I can read music just enough to peck out the tune — so I figure that learning familiar Christmas songs will help a lot, particularly with reading the time value of each note. I married a drummer, but his knack for reading note values has not rubbed off on me!
